There were of course many things I looked forward to indulging in once I turned over my twenty-first leaf—mojitos at Mas, beer tasting at Blue Mountain, and C & O’s late-night drink and food menu to name a few. It was, however, the downtown rooftop bar I always gazed up at with envy, watching all the “hip” people mingling so high above, that really got me counting down the days. With the promise of specialty cocktails, a starry night overhead, and a vibe that was more big city than quaint Blue Ridge Mountain town, even the name Skybar began to scream ultra-cool in my mind. So it was about time that, deciding to have a girls’ night out on the town (now that I could), my friend and I dolled up and made the climb up to the second floor of Commonwealth Restaurant.
It was full when we got there, but after a few minutes we lucked out and found ourselves sitting at the bar. Once there, we were faced with the hardest part of the evening—choosing a drink. With an ingredient list that was exciting, if not a bit foreign (how would I know what a Fernet Branca is?), each concoction was equally tempting. Eventually I settled with the Done Did It—Southern Comfort, apple cider, and ginger beer—if only because of my recent ginger obsession. It was refreshing, tasty, and surprisingly light; before I knew it, my glass was empty and I was stealing sips from my friend’s own delicious cocktail. All around, the experience was everything I hoped it would be and I left that night glad to say that I finally done did it—done did Skybar, that is.
