Drink This! Virginia Highland Smash

A great recipe should never be relegated to one event or season. A good barbecue in the winter? Bring it on. Pumpkin pie in July? Pass me a slice! Eggnog on Easter? Maybe that’s pushing it. But when you’ve come across a classic where you know you can’t go wrong, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy when the craving strikes you.

Take the Whisky Smash for instance—a traditional race-day cooler from the 1950s. No need to make the trip to the Kentucky Derby, nor even to a Derby Day party. You can sip on this perfect citrus-and-mint combination as soon as you have the ingredients in hand.

Sorry, no smashing of whisky bottles, but you do get some sweet muddling action with the lemon, fresh mint leaves and honey syrup. Next you pour in some Virginia Highland Malt Whisky from Lovingston’s own Virginia Distillery Company, shake it all up, and strain over ice. And there you go, a light and flavor-packed cocktail that will see you through the warm (and cold) months to come!

Virginia Distillery Company’s “Virginia Highland Smash”

1 1/2 oz Virginia Highland Malt Whisky
1/4 lemon
5 mint leaves
1/2 oz honey syrup
Ice + mint for garnish
